La grotte sépulcrale chalcolithique du Rec d 'Aigues Rouges à Saint-Pons-de-Thomières (Hérault)

An archeological survey was lead in Rec d 'Aigues Rouges cave at Saint-Pons-de-Thomières (Hérault) bringing evidence of a recent Neolithic/Chalcolithic collective burial. The up to date methods of "field anthropology" permitted to observe accurately the sepulchral level composed of several individuals and a gathering of the skulls was clearly evident. An architecture closely related to the utilisation of this cavity was displayed. These arrangements concern the transformation of the cave to allow a better body circulation, an elaboration of structures for the access and reception of dead people, and the closing of the burial. These observations contribute to a better knowledge of the prehistoric mortuary practices in the Languedoc region.La grotte sépulcrale du Rec d'Aigues Rouges à Saint-Pons-de-Thomières (Hérault) a fait l'objet d'une intervention archéologique de sauvetage qui a mis au jour une sépulture collective du Néolithique final/Chalcolithique. Les méthodes actuelles de l'anthropologie de terrain ont permis d'observer finement la couche sépulcrale composée de quelques individus où le rassemblement des crânes a pu être démontré. Une architecture, intimement liée à l'utilisation de cette cavité, a également été mise en évidence. Ces aménagements concernent la transformation de la grotte pour y faciliter la circulation, l'élaboration de structures d'accès et de réception des cadavres, et la condamnation de la sépulture. Ces observations contribuent à une meilleure connaissance des pratiques funéraires préhistoriques en Languedoc.Courtaud Patrice, Janin Thierry.
