Comprendre comment l’enfant apprend : une étape vers la compréhension des effets des pratiques pédagogiques

Understanding the way children learn: a step towards understanding the effects of pedagogical practices There is no assessing nor understanding the effects of pedagogical practices without first taking into account the way children learn. The psychology of cognitive development and of learning sheds light on this field by making a clear distinction between the learning of rules and the learning of examples. This dissociation about the way primary school children learn is illustrated by a set of works on the acquisition of the command of spelling according to rules of grammar. These works show that the mastering of the command of the marking of the plural of names doesn’t depend entirely on the proper rules being taught and being completed by the proper exercises, but also on the ability to store in memory the global figure of the words as initially encountered. The interference that may occur between the application of rules, the recollection of instances and the solutions that the child will opt for according to the situations encountered puts into question the evaluation methods and the validity of pedagogical practices that aim at developing the skills of each child in the field of creative writing.On ne peut évaluer et comprendre les effets des pratiques pédagogiques sans prendre en compte la façon dont l’enfant apprend. La psychologie du développement cognitif et de l’apprentissage apporte un éclairage dans ce domaine en dissociant apprentissage de règles et apprentissage d’instances. Cette dissociation concernant la façon dont l’enfant d’école primaire apprend est ici illustrée par la présentation d’une série de recherches portant sur l’acquisition de l’orthographe grammaticale. Ces travaux montrent que l’acquisition du marquage du pluriel des noms ne relève pas exclusivement de l’enseignement de la règle qui est dispensé et des exercices qui l’accompagnent, mais aussi de la récupération en mémoire de la forme globale des mots tels qu’ils ont été initialement rencontrés. La compétition qui peut s’ensuivre entre application de règles et remémoration d’instances, et les solutions que peut lui apporter l’élève selon les situations, conduisent à s’interroger sur l’évaluation et la compréhension des pratiques pédagogiques visant à développer les compétences de l’enfant dans le domaine de la production écrite.Largy Pierre, Cousin Marie-Paule, Dédéyan Alexandra, Fayol Michel.
