A study of shoreline variations has to take into account both sea-level markers and dating indicators. If last interglacial (Tyrrhenian) and recent Holocene shores can be observed frequently, beaches and shores of the last glacial period have usually been destroyed by the last post glacial transgression. The Tyrrhenian has been linked to marine isotope stage (MIS) 5 and its subdivisions (5.e, 5.c, 5. a). These date between 130 000 and 80 000 BP. The last post glacial transgression is believed to have reached approximately the present sea-level position 6 000 years ago.
