After having first been severed from the teaching profession in 1988, head teachers today are being asked to adapt themselves to a new management culture. This is being achieved by initiating closer ties with the body of subject inspectors and, to a larger extent, with all the other managers or the French national education system, now regrouped under the generic title of « New Public Managers ». The effects awaited on the teaching activity have been clearly announced : the objective is to redefine both the missions of schools and those of the teaching profession as a whole.
