This paper presents a methodological reflection based on the experience of the European programme "The Fourth World-University". This programme of training, action and research was based on the principle of alternation-alternating learning, in all senses of the word- and on the cross fertilization of three kinds of knowledge about extreme poverty : the lived knowledge of those with real experience of extreme poverty, the practical knowledge of those activists who work with the very poor, and the knowledge of researchers and academics.
