These series of 3-year follow-up studies were conducted with French-native speaking children, without any particular problem which could possibly perturb the reading/spelling acquisition. These children who were non- readers at the end of the last kindergarten year were administered reading aloud and spelling under dictation tests in first grade (middle and end of the first grade). They were also administered, during the same sessions, and at the end of the second grade, comprehension tests for words and sentences in silent reading and reading aloud. Their metaphonologi- cal skills, their vocabulary level and their non-verbal cognitive level had been also assessed at the beginning of the last year of kindergarten. The results showed that, ...
