UWI BUIN, WALT» MUUIft, HIIKI WIRTH The paper introduces briefly the general problem of the protection of confidentiality of statistical and social science data ; it discusses the notion that the protection of the confidentiality of data from individual respondents is crucially dependent on the impossibility of identifying records that have been anonymized . The paper then elaborates several scenarios in which the components of the identification risk vary systematically. It then discusses the methods and the setup of several experiments in which the risks of identification in these scenarios have been assessed empirically. The results show that only under special circumstances the risks of a successful identification are not null.L' articl...
