JEAN-MICHEL BERTHELOT The increase in the number of bachelors and the pressure exercised on the universities cannot be analysed if they have not been replaced in the general context of the evolution of the higher educational system in France. This reveals the rate of progression, a lot stronger in the selected branches and the ambiguous status of the universities, who tend potentially to become, at the level of the first cycle, the relagation zone. These are the only higher educational structures who enjoy a relative autonomy.
