In June 1991, the Mount Pinatubo volcano (Philippines) suddenly reawakened after five centuries, it is known as one of the biggest eruption of the last century. Unleashed by heavy monsoon, devastating lahars drifted down the volcano’s flanks to Bacolor, a town at the heart of the province of Pampanga. This paper analyses the territorial implications of the eruption on the Kapampangans, the ethnic group living in Bocolor, as well as the impact on their identity. We find that the natural hazard and crisis management was deeply influenced by the ethno-cultural factors, setting apart the Kapampangans from the other communities in the surroundings.
