Abstract This article attempts to explain the dichotomy which the author has observed in the Middle Ages, between Sicily and Catalonia. It examines in Sicily the development of clan organization, in the sense of a closed and colonized milieu, and, in Catalonia, the flowering of an aristocratic conscience among the peasantry and bouigeoisie. These are the differing routes followed by these two regions fiom the XIIIth to the XVth centuries. In spite of their integration into vast territorial regimes, Sicily and Catalonia establish their particulaiisms almost ■ simultaneously.
