The Duke of York islands group in S1 George's Channel of the Bismarck Archipelago (Papua New Guinea) is the natural transfer point between New Britain's Gazelle Peninsula and southern New Ireland. The arrival there of European missionaries and traders in 1875 led to lively economic and political cooperation with enterprising Big men who amassed shell money and European commodities which they channelled into extended communal exchange, at the same time skilfully operating certain systemic institutions towards their own private purposes.
