Topulu and his brothers. Aspects of societal transition in the Bismarck Archipelago of Papua New Guinea during the 1870s and 1880s

Summary. The Duke of York islands group in S1 George's Channel of the Bismarck Archipelago (Papua New Guinea) is the natural transfer point between New Britain's Gazelle Peninsula and southern New Ireland. The arrival there of European missionaries and traders in 1875 led to lively economic and political cooperation with enterprising Big men who amassed shell money and European commodities which they channelled into extended communal exchange, at the same time skilfully operating certain systemic institutions towards their own private purposes. The accumulation of wealth resulted in political concentration. Although they had become participants in capitalist exchange and were increasingly dominated by colonial exigencies, Big men remained manipulators of social relationships rather than turning into (exploiting) enterpreneurs ; principles and structural elements antagonistically opposed to capitalism as an economic and societal system retained dominance. Tolai accumulation in the early period up to the 1880s did not result in capital but in investment into social-relations reproduction. As long as societies are dominated through the sphere of exchange and thus control their own labour conditions, pre-Euro- pean relations of production remain essentially intact. Finally, through an examination of the meaning of the concept 'profit' for Tolai and Europeans respectively, and of the institution of unequal exchange based on two mutually exclusive systems of relation and valuation, an equation of early colonial contact is being proposed.Résumé. Le passage naturel entre la péninsule de la Gazelle (Nouvelle Bretagne) et le sud de la Nouvelle Irlande, est constitué par le groupe d'îles Duke of York dans le S' George's Channel de l'Archipel Bismarck. Là, en 1875 à l'arrivée des missionnaires et des marchands européens s'établit une coopération économique et politique florissante avec des Big men avisés qui rassemblèrent ainsi monnaie de coquillage et marchandises européennes qu'ils introduisirent dans le système d'échange communal, tout en orientant certaines institutions à leur avantage personnel. L'accumulation de richesses produisit la concentration politique. Quoique devenus participants dans l'échange capitaliste et de plus en plus dominés par les exigences coloniales, les Big men restèrent des manipulateurs de relations sociales sans devenir des entrepreneurs- exploiteurs. Les principes et les éléments d'une structure antagoniste au capitalisme comme système économique et social restèrent prédominants. L'accumulation des Tolai (dans la première période) jusque dans les années 1880 n'aboutit pas au capital mais à l'investissement dans la reproduction des rapports sociaux. Aussi longtemps que ces sociétés furent dominées par le système d'échange tout en continuant à contrôler leurs propres conditions de travail, le système de production des relations préeuropéennes demeura intact. Finalement, en examinant la signification du concept « profit », pour les Tolai et les Européens respectivement et l'institution de l'échange inégal reposant sur deux systèmes s'excluant mutuellement en termes de relations et valuations, on proposera une équation du premier contact colonial.Schutte Heinz.
