Time-honored protests by missionaries and modern ideological attitudes have induced many people to believe that planters used to make big money at the turn of the century. Through examining their business papers and through calculating average costs of production per ton of copra and per hectare of plantation land one has to realize the assumption was wrong. If those very large plantations that belonged to the most powerful companies are not considered, plantation businesses usually tended to lose money. Other entrepreneurs were more successful.
