The author analyses the historical origin of the Baruya, a small group living in two high valleys on the Kratke Range in Papua-New Guinea. He describes their relationships with the neighbouring groups during the past two centuries before their control by the Australian government (1960). Some of these neighbouring groups share with the Baruya the same culture and speak closely related languages. For the author the Baruya and the neighbouring groups of the same culture form an "ethny".
