Maurice Leenhardt' s masterful theoretical study, « Do Kamo », published in 1947, was written from the verbatim transcript of a 1945 course of lectures given at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes, 5th Section, Paris. Forty years later this study is confronted here with an attempted analysis of the contents of the data upon which the book is based, and with a description of the situation then prevailing in New Caledonia. Maurice Leenhardt was considered by the settlers as their enemy, but by the Melanesians as the man who brought them new techniques of peaceful resistance, through a church organization the colonial authorities could not afford to disregard. Reading anew this book, in 1986, chapter by chapter, brings in new data and puts the accent on the ideas which have held their ground and on some which have become open to doubt. The author, whose introduction to the Melanesian field was by Maurice Leenhardt himself, has had the privilege to work with nearly all the latter' s Melanesian students and helpers and has accumulated today almost forty years of personal experience of New Caledonia, the Loyalty islands and Vanuatu.L'ouvrage de Maurice Leenhardt, « Do Kamo », publié en 1947, ouvrage de réflexion théorique, transcription d'un cours de l'hiver 1945 à l'École Pratique des Hautes Études, 5e Section, fait l'objet, quarante ans plus tard, d'une analyse cherchant à le situer par rapport au contenu des informations recueillies, dans les meilleures conditions possibles, entre 1903 et 1925, et par rapport à la situation locale. Maurice Leenhardt était perçu par les colons comme un ennemi et par les Mélanésiens comme celui qui apportait un moyen nouveau de résistance pacifique et une structure autonome d'organisation écclésiale que le pouvoir colonial ne pouvait ignorer. La relecture en 1986 procède chapitre par chapitre, relevant les thèses qui restent encore valables, les plus nombreuses, et celles qui ont perdu de leur actualité. Ces thèses sont discutées par rapport aux données nouvelles qui les confirment, les développent ou parfois les infirment. L'auteur, introduit sur le terrain mélanésien par Maurice Leenhardt lui-même, a eu le privilège de travailler avec presque tous les anciens élèves et collaborateurs mélanésiens de son maître et a près de quarante ans d'expérience personnelle de Nouvelle-Calédonie, des îles Loyalty et du Vanuatu.Guiart Jean.
