In 1857 — years before the mainstream of Oceanian labour recruiting — 52 Gilbertese and 14 Solomon Islanders were abducted for work in the French colony of Réunion. British protests brought the reply from the French Ambassador that the recruits had been regularly obtained under the supervision of a government délégué. It was a 'cover-up': the French consul in Sydney had in fact refused to comply with the request of the Governor of Réunion that authorize a délégué to accompany the expedition. The incident, however, appears to have had the effect of making the French government more sensitive to the possibility of such abuses in Oceania.
