French Labour recruiting in the Pacific islands: an early episode

In 1857 — years before the mainstream of Oceanian labour recruiting — 52 Gilbertese and 14 Solomon Islanders were abducted for work in the French colony of Réunion. British protests brought the reply from the French Ambassador that the recruits had been regularly obtained under the supervision of a government délégué. It was a 'cover-up': the French consul in Sydney had in fact refused to comply with the request of the Governor of Réunion that authorize a délégué to accompany the expedition. The incident, however, appears to have had the effect of making the French government more sensitive to the possibility of such abuses in Oceania. The fate of the sixty-six Pacific Islanders in Réunion is not known.En 1857, des années avant la principale période du recrutement de la main d'œuvre océanienne, 52 insulaires originaires des îles Gilbert et 14 des îles Salomon furent enlevés de force pour travailler dans la colonie française de l'île de la Réunion. Les réponses de l'ambassadeur français à l'égard des protestations britanniques indiquèrent que les recrues avaient été régulièrement obtenues sous l'autorité d'un délégué du gouvernement. En fait, c'était une « couverture » : le consul français à Sydney avait refusé de se conformer à la demande du gouverneur de la Réunion afin d'autoriser un délégué à accompagner l'expédition. L'incident semble avoir rendu le gouvernement français plus vigilant devant l'éventualité de tels abus en Océanie.
