UK agriculture, and particularly its arable component, largely benefited from integration in the EEC. Productivity and self-sufficiency ratios have risen. The cost of food has however increased as high priced intra EEC trade replaced low priced traditional imports. The CAP also obliges UK to assume costly budget transfers and since farm structures are rather good, there are few community subsidies flowing in the other direction. This explains the strategy of development of production adopted in UK and the request for reducing UK contributions to the EEC budget. A more market orientated price policy is recommended.
