The " Pre-Chassey " of Fontbrégoua, Salernes (Var, France) is one of the groups attributed to an early, non Chassey, Middle Neolithic. On the basis ofl4C dating, it occurred around 4500 ВС (calibrated), i.e. contemporary with or just before the constitution of the "Southern Chassey ". This article presents the typological results of a hitherto unpublished study of the ceramic finds. Searching for comparisons reveals common aspects with some of the last southern Early Neolithic contexts or with the first Middle Neolithic groups, rather than with the Chassey Culture. That explains why the authors prefer to designate the series as "Pre-Chassey " rather than " Proto-Chassey ". Relations do exist with Italy, but are tenuous: some decorative mode...
