SUMMARY. — The mathematical models of modern financial economics are not simply « academic » : they are used by market practitioners, and influence both the overall shape of markets and particular chains of events. Critical to many such models is the assumption that if empirical prices differ from the values they « should » have (according to the model), then the resultant price discrepancies will be exploited by arbitrageurs and thus eliminated or reduced.
