The Maastricht-Belvédère loess- and gravel pit, well-known for its intra-Saalian interglacial (OIS 7) archaeology, also yielded an Early Weichsehan (OIS 5) flint scatter (Site J). Technological, typological and use wear analyses point to a paradox within this non-Levallois Middle Palaeolithic assemblage, as both rather wasteful and economising practices can be observed. This pattern is explained here from a mere functionalists perspective.
