The archaeological site of Bediyeh : the constructed landscape

à.Part of the summer fieldwork of 2003 at the site of Bediyeh (Northern Jordan) was devoted to analyze the constructed landscape, which is the creation and erection of monuments, tombs, buildings and other structures. Geographic Information System was used to perform the landscape analysis using viewshed. One of the constructed elements at the site is the three cemeteries that were dated to the Late Roman/Early Byzantine periods; the western cemetery has chamber tombs with arcosolia, the southern cemetery has single horizontal shaft graves and the eastern cemetery has horizontal shaft graves, vertical shaft tombs and chamber tombs. Based on tomb typologies and artifact assemblages recovered from these tombs, tomb reuse was clear as well as social stratification. A predictive model was constructed using GIS to predict further tombs at the western cemetery that is believed to have housed people of higher social class. The performance of the model was 0.82, which is theoretically accepted and it is going to be tested during the excavations of next summer.Une partie de la campagne 2003 sur le site de Bediyeh (nord de la Jordanie) a été consacrée à l'analyse du paysage monumental : monuments, tombes et autres structures. Un Système d'Information Géographique (SIG) a été mis en œuvre. L'un des éléments monumentaux est constitué par trois nécropoles datées Romain tardif/ Protobyzantin. La nécropole ouest comporte des tombes à chambre avec arcosolia, le cimetière sud seulement des tombes simples à fosses, et le cimetière est des tombes à fosses et des tombes à chambres. À partir de la typologie des tombes et du matériel découvert, on a mis en évidence à la fois leur remploi et une stratification sociale. Une modélisation a été faite en utilisant le SIG pour détecter des tombes supplémentaires dans la nécropole ouest que l'on estime avoir été occupée par la classe sociale supérieure.
