The best-known examples of desert loess are in the northern Sahara Margins the Matmata plateau (southern Tunisia), and the northern and southern borders of the Negev (Israel). The comparison of these deposits and their paleosoils (buried during the eolian deposition) requires the study of the geomorphic context, the present climate and the stratigraphy of the loess in these two areas. The size distributions of the Matmata loess are more homogeneous than in the Negev where the grain size is generally finer (fine silts and clay size fraction) and therefore more comparable with the size distribution of penglacial loess.
