During the 18th century, the early significance of freemasonry in the cities of the Seine Valley was exemplified by the heavy concentration of freemasons there. As the examples of Le Havre and Pont-Audemer demonstrate, at that time, it was reasonably common to simultaneously be a freemason and a member of a religious confraternity.
