La France et les Grecs sous la Révolution et l'Empire, étude d'une représentation à l'échelle de peuples

Dimitri Nicolaïdis : France and the Greeks under the Revolution and the Empire, a study in representation as developed by national communities. This study analyses the collective discourse of Frenchmen — consular agents, traders, travellers — concerning the people of Greece during the Revolution and the Empire in an effort to outline several collective representations of national types within a particularly complex field of research. Within the ever-present frame of reference of mythical ancient history, the Greek is of course portrayed here as degenerate and in need of regeneration but the Greece could still offer a few places where it was possible to discover the unaltered images of the Greek as people imagined them. In a series of reflected images, observers judged the Greek people in relation to their oppressors, the Turcs and in relation to the oppressed, the Armenians without losing sight of their Russian and English rivals whose influence was beginning to compete with that of the French. With the passing of events such as the occupation of the Ionian islands, different strategies and attitudes developed which set up the premises of the fantasy image later imposed by the current of philhelleniism.Dimitri Nicolaïdis : La France et les Grecs sous la Révolution et l'Empire, étude d'une représentation à l'échelle de peuples. Cette étude s'attache à analyser le discours collectif des Français — agents consulaires, commerçants, voyageurs — sur les Grecs pendant la Révolution et l'Empire dans le but de dégager une ou des représentations collectives, dans un champ particulièrement complexe. Si par référence au mythe antique omniprésent, il est évident que le Grec dégénéré est à régénérer, la péninsule peut toutefois offrir des sites où s'est conservée l'image inaltérée du Grec tel qu'on le rêve. Dans un jeu d'images réfractées, les observateurs apprécient les Grecs par références aux oppresseurs — les Turcs — aux opprimés — Juifs ou Arméniens — sans perdre de vue les rivaux russes et anglais dont l'influence concurrence celle de la France. Au fil des événements, comme l'occupation des îles ioniennes, des stratégies comme des attitudes différentes se dessinent, laissant percevoir ce qui s'imposera, à travers une image fantasmée, dans le courant philhellène.Nicolaidis Dimitri.
