Wolfgang Schmale : France, Germany and the Constitution (1789-1815). Centered in the field of comparative constitutional history, this article is presented as a contribution to the history of "the constitutional mentality" of the Eighteenth Century. It asks what exactly was the meaning of the idea of constitution in the twin historical context of France and Germany between 1789 and 1815. The author analyses the two countries one after another and demonstrates how the revolutionary events in France deepened the hiatus between the two, as the term took on a more specific meaning while in Germany it referred initially to vague notions inherited from the tradition of the Empire and of Enlightenment despotism.
