The density of popular societies in the towns around Paris was quite remarkable even if some of them were established quite late. They contributed greatly to the growth of political awareness in rural communities which acted as relays for the influence of Paris. This is clear from the frequency of contacts between the rural communities and Parisian agents, both representatives and commissioners, and from the constant influence of the Cordelier movement. This kind of activity could hardly avoid running into difficulties with the authorities. The author makes a sociological study of the group of militants that sprang up.
