Mimetism and Rite : From the Funeral Lamentation to the Phenomenology of Padre Pio The purpose of this article is to analyse the psycho-technical systems at work in the « canonical » as well as « non-canonical » ritual behaviours which can be observed within magico-religious life in South Italy. The author re-examines the interpretations of the so-called funeral lamentation, notably the thesis of Ernesto De Martino according to which a controlled personality split would occur, which rite underlies. As a matter of fact, these « technologies of the mind » do not seem to have lost their function along with the decline of the peasant cultures.
