Traductions, impressions et usages du Coran dans le sous-continent indien (1786-1975)

Translations, prints and uses of the Kuran in the Indian Subcontinent, 1786-1875 This article provides a conspectus of the history of the vulgarisation of the Kuran in the Indian Subcontinent during the British period and after Independance. It reviews the first translations in a vehicular language, Urdu, in Delhi at the end of the 18th century, and the first printing of these translations along with the Arabic text near Calcutta in 1829. Then jumping to the end of the period it describes in details a very popular edition first printed in Delhi in 1934 and still in use even in places as remote as Nepalese mountain villages : it offers, along with the Arabic text, two Urdu (literal, and literary) translations, a commentary in the margins and a lenghty encyclopaedic introduction. The article ends with an analysis of the various uses of this edition of the Kuran in worship, study and magical cures.Cet article donne une vue d'ensemble de l'histoire de la vulgarisation du Coran dans le sous-continent indien pendant la période britannique et après l'indépendance. Il passe en revue d'abord les premières traductions faites dans une langue véhiculaire, l'ourdou, à Delhi à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, et leur première impression à Calcutta en 1829 avec le texte arabe. Puis, sautant à la fin de la période, l'article décrit en détail une édition populaire du Coran imprimée pour la première fois à Delhi en 1934 et encore en usage jusque dans des endroits aussi reculés que des villages dans les montagnes du Népal : cette édition offre, avec le texte arabe, deux traductions (littérale et littéraire), un commentaire marginal et une longue introduction encyclopédique.
