Sainthood and paths of perfection among Middle-Eastern Christians (17th-18th centuries) This might be considered as an introduction to the history and anthropology of sainthood among Eastern Christians, which still remain to be written. Hagiography was a rather popular genre during the 17 th and 18th centuries, which drew its inspiration from local traditions as well as Greek and Latin models. It was a part of the symbolic production, which the authorities of the different competing Churches sought to control. Shrines where saints were worshipped tended to be in the countryside, far away from the great Islamic centres.
