Dr. Faust, Great Sodomite and Necromancer

The origin of the Faust myth, such as it appears in the Protestant "Volksbuch" of 1587 is ancient. It is already present in several late antique sources like the novel of Clement of Rome and the legends of Cyprian of Antioch and Theophilus of Adana. On the other hand, the history of Faust's myth continues well after the "Volksbuch", both in religion and in literature. Analysing several versions of Faust across the ages, the author intends to evince their religious content and to show that myth is nothing but a hollow narrative pattern which can be filled up at will with the most disparate messages. Consequently, myth should not be envisaged as a semantic, but as a merely narrative category.L'origine du mythe de Faust, tel qu'il a été formulé dans le Volksbuch protestant de 1587, est ancienne. Il apparaît déjà dans plusieurs sources de l'Antiquité tardive comme le roman de Clément de Rome, la légende de Cyprien d'Antioche et celle de Théophile d'Adana. D'autre part, l'histoire du mythe se poursuit bien au-delà du Volksbuch, aussi bien dans la religion que dans la littérature. Analysant de nombreuses versions de Faust à travers les âges, l'auteur se propose de démontrer que le mythe est un schéma narratif creux, qu'il est possible de remplir à volonté avec les messages les plus divers.
