Economy and population : condition of Hungary by Egon SZABADY Of all European countries, in 1965 Hungary is the one with the lowest birth rate, to such an extent that the replacement of successive generations is not even assured. Furthermore, owing to the increased expectation of life, the population of Hungary is ageing.' From the economic point of view this is reflected in a decline in the proportion of work force to total population, with all the unfavourable consequences which that involves. That is why the Hungarian authorities are trying to introduce a demographic policy aimed at increasing the number of births, at least to the point of replacing the population and at gradually regularising the age structure.
