The art of ambiguity : heresy, inquisition and casuistry. Questions on the transmission of a medieval doctrine to modern times - This paper aims to investigate the medieval origin of the « doctrine » on ambiguities and mental restrictions endorsed in Modern Times by catholic theologians (especially those members of the Company of Jesus). It is rather surprising to find out that the constitutive elements of this « doctrine » come straight from inquisitorial texts describing and analysing verbal stratagems used by heretics (i.e. Waldensian, Cathars) when they were subjected to an interrogatory.
