Summary. — Restoration of Christ Church, Spitalfields in the east end of London, necessitated the clearance of the crypt in 1984. Nearly 1000 inhumations were recovered, of which 396 had coffin plate information giving name, age and date of death. All had been born between 1646 and 1852. Deaths occurred between 1729 and 1852. One third of the sample were juvenile ; whilst mean age at death of the adult sample was 56 years for both sexes. Death certificates are available for only 26 individuals. Preservation of the bones is variable, with considerable post-mortem chemical alteration leading to loss of a third of the data.
