L'Anthropologie « de terrain » : reconnaissance et interprétation des gestes funéraires

« FIELD ANTHROPOLOGY » : IDENTIFICATION AND INTERPRETATION OF MORTUARY PRACTICES The understanding of mortuary practices requires a methodology which recognizes the importance of both the position of the skeletal remains and the taphonomy of the cadaver. The chronology of articulations dislocated during the decomposition of the body serves as a basis for demonstrating the nature and evolution of burials. It is the aim of field anthropology to recontruct the original position of the body, the arrangement of any pieces clothing, ornament or other furnishings. Furthermore, it is the field anthropologist who must define the architecture of the tomb and the precise nature and circumstances of decomposition. This requires the reconstruction of the burial itself in terms of the conditions surrounding the body, e.g. if it was directly covered by soil or surrounded by effective space, in order to identify effects these contribute to the position of skeletal remains. In addition, we discuss the criteria for the identification of secondary burials, consecutives burials and re-burials in the same tomb and specific methods for the analysis of multiple and collective burials.Résumé. — La reconnaissance des gestes funéraires impose une méthodologie qui accorde une place privilégiée aux restes osseux et à la taphonomie du cadavre. L'ordre des dislocations articulaires durant la décomposition du cadavre constitue l'une des bases fondamentales de la discussion : les articulations labiles, plus précocement rompues, apportent les meilleurs arguments pour démontrer le caractère primaire d'une sépulture et discuter son évolution. L'anthropologie de terrain vise à restituer l'attitude originelle du corps, l'agencement des pièces d'habillement, des éléments de parure et du mobilier ; elle contribue aussi à définir l'architecture de la tombe en précisant le milieu de décomposition (espace vide ou colmaté) et en montrant les effets du contenant sur la position des ossements. Sont également discutés dans cet article les critères d'identification de dépôts secondaires, les réinterventions consécutives à la réouverture de la tombe, et les méthodes spécifiques d'analyse des sépultures multiples et collectives.Duday Henri, Courtaud Patrice, Crubezy Éric, Sellier Pascal, Tillier Anne-Marie.
