Because of its institutional character, the ethnological practice in USSR is different from its counterpart in the West. The choice of research topics, the organization of team work in the field, the relations with local authorities and with different institutions are ruled by a specific system. The fonction of an ethnologist within society is also different. He belongs to the domain of public service. He is consulted in case of conflict. Consequently the ethnologist is not confined to the part of analyst but asked also as an active agent of the authorities.
