Soviet anthropology and the ethnography of Alaska

Lydia T. Black, Soviet anthropology and the ethnography of Alaska. The differences in approaches to micro-level ethnography between US and USSR scholars are discussed, with Alaska ethnography cited as a test case. It is proposed that some of these differences arise from the generalized, ideological framework employed by the researchers. Terminological differences are cited as contributing to cross-cultural miscommunications between scholars of the two nations. The paper ends with a plea for resolution, achievable once we recognize the nature of such differences.Lydia T. Black, L'anthropologie soviétique et l'ethnographie de l'Alaska. On examine ici les différences entre chercheurs américains et soviétiques dans leurs façons d'aborder l'ethnographie à un micro niveau, en prenant l'ethnographie de l'Alaska comme précédent. On émet l'hypothèse que certaines de ces différences sont imputables au cadre idéologique utilisé par les chercheurs. On cite des différences terminologiques qui contribuent à une mauvaise communication interculturelle entre les chercheurs de ces deux nations.
