The first pro-Marxist or Marxists critics of Gor'kii's work (Solov'ev-Andreevich, Divil'kovskii, Vorovskii) mainly defend the "heroic figure" that Gor'kii has introduced into literature and his Nietzschean ethics of the will to live against the attacks of Populists (Mikhailovskii).
