Michel Aucouturier, Gor'kii and the Marxist literary criticism before the Revolution. The first pro-Marxist or Marxists critics of Gor'kii's work (Solov'ev-Andreevich, Divil'kovskii, Vorovskii) mainly defend the "heroic figure" that Gor'kii has introduced into literature and his Nietzschean ethics of the will to live against the attacks of Populists (Mikhailovskii). The problem of his aesthetics will arise only in connection with the novels Mat' and Ispoved' (1907-1908) in which Vorovskii sees a voluntary sacrifice of the artist to the publicist, thus noting the divorce between aesthetic and ideological values. For its justification, he formulates the theory of the "lag of artistic ideology in relation to scientific ideology" which implicitly questions the generally admitted definition of Gor'kii as a "proletarian writer." Among certain Marxist publicists and critics (for instance, the Menshevik R. Grigor'ev) we thus see the emergence of the theme of "Gor'kii, petty -bourgeois writer," "flesh of the flesh of Okurov," which will be taken up immediately after the Revolution by part of the "proletarian" criticism hostile to Gor'kii. Les premiers critiques marxisants ou marxistes de l'œuvre de Gor'kij (Solov'ev- Andrecvic, Divil'kovskij, Vorovskij) se donnent surtout pour tâche de défendre le « personnage héroïque » que Gor'kij a introduit dans la littérature et sa morale « nietzschéenne » du vouloir-vivre face aux attaques des populistes (Mihajlovskij). Le problème de son esthétique ne sera posé qu'à propos des romans Mat' et Ispoveď (1907-1908), où Vorovskij voit un sacrifice volontaire de l'artiste au publicisté, constatant ainsi un divorce entre valeur esthétique et valeur idéologique. Pour le justifier, il élabore la théorie du « retard de l'idéologie artistique sur l'idéologie scientifique », qui remet implicitement en cause la définition communément admise de Gor'kij comme « écrivain prolétarien ». On voit ainsi apparaître chez certains publicistes et critiques marxistes (le menchevik R. Grigor'ev) le thème de « Gor'kij écrivain petit -bourgeois », « chair de la chair d'Okurov », qui sera repris au lendemain de la révolution par une partie de la critique « prolétarienne » hostile à Gor'kij. L'exemple de Gor'kij illustre selon l'auteur la fragilité de certaines notions clefs de la critique littéraire marxiste.Aucouturier Michel.
