Empiriocriticism : a bolshevik philosophy ?

In the first decade of this century a group of Bolshevik theorists attempted to construct a new philosophical basis for marxism with the aid of the empiriocriticism of Avenarius and Mach. Their attempt is usually treated by historians as merely a brief episode in Bolshevik party history. This article examines its significance within the wider framework of the collective psychology of the Russian radical intelligentsia, in which voluntarism was uneasily reconciled with a predilection for deterministic philosophies of history. The empiriocriticist movement can be seen as a final attempt on the part of the members of the intelligentsia to achieve a synthesis of these elements in their outlook. Their writings and the ensuing polemics are examined with particular regard to the light which they shed on the social psychology of the Russian radical intelligentsia and on the part played by its subjective aspirations in the formulation of its historical goals.Aileen Kelly, L'empiriocriticisme : une philosophie bolchevique ? Au cours de la première décennie de ce siècle, un groupe de théoriciens bolcheviks eut recours à l'empiriocriticisme d'Avenarius et de Mach pour étayer une nouvelle conception philosophique du marxisme. En général les historiens font peu de cas de cette tentative et la considèrent comme un bref épisode de l'histoire du parti bolchevik. Cet article se propose d'étudier sa signification dans le cadre élargi de la psychologie collective de l'intelligentsia radicale russe où le volontarisme était difficilement conciliable avec la prédilection pour les philosophies déterministes de l'histoire. On peut considérer le mouvement empiriocriticiste comme une dernière tentative de synthèse de ces éléments examinés du point de vue des membres de l'intelligentsia. On analyse leurs écrits et les polémiques qu'ils provoquèrent, en tenant compte de la lumière qu'ils ont jetée sur la psychologie sociale de l'intelligentsia radicale russe et sur le rôle que ses aspirations subjectives ont joué dans la formulation de ses objectifs historiques.Kelly Aileen.
