La philosophie de la fonction monarchique en Russie au XVIe siècle

In less than one century, during the period going from the death of Ivan III (1505) to that of Ivan IV (1584), the Great Prince of Moscow from a vassal of the Golden Hord changes into a sovereign by divine right, tsar, and autocrat of the whole of Russia, whereas his capital takes over from Byzantium and is acknowledged as the Third and last Rome. Such a metamorphosis could not be explained without the patient effort of theoretical thought which was the task of the clerks of the XVIth century striving to define and justify by a doctrine the prerogatives of the " new Constantin. " It is this construction of an original theocratic absolutism, inherited from Byzantium and from the Russian national past, that the present study outlines in its various stages. Quotations from the most significant texts allow to clearly visualize this legal, political and religious revolution which culminated in the correspondence of Ivan IV and Prince Kurbskij and which expresses this " new Russian orthodox autocracy, " the ultimate destiny of which is known to all.François-Xavier Coquin, La philosophie de la fonction monarchique en Russie au XVIe siècle. En moins d'un siècle, de la mort d'Ivan III (1505) à celle d'Ivan IV (1584), le vassal de la Horde d'or qu'était le grand-prince de Moscou s'était mué en un souverain de droit divin, tsar et autocrate de toute la Russie, tandis que sa capitale prenait elle-même la relève de Byzance et se voyait célébrer comme la Troisième et dernière Rome. Cette métamorphose resterait inexplicable sans le patient effort de réflexion théorique accompli par les clercs du XVIe siècle pour définir et justifier doctrinalement les prérogatives du nouveau Constantin. C'est cette élaboration d'un absolutisme théocratique original, héritier tout à la fois de Byzance et d'un passé national proprement russe, dont cette étude nous retrace les étapes. La citation des textes les plus marquants permet de saisir sur le vif cette révolution politico-juridique et religieuse qui culmine dans la correspondance d'Ivan IV et du prince Kurbskij, où s'affirme cette « nouvelle autocratie russe orthodoxe » promise aux destinées que l'on sait.Coquin François-Xavier.
