SUMMARY. — The year 1986 marks the tercentenary of the publication of Newton's Principia. It is also the year of the return of Halley's Comet. Thus the year 1986 is an opportune time to search the archives of the Paris Observatory for evidence of the mutual influence of French and British astronomers upon each other. We find this influence just as easily in connection with the 17th century measurement of the earth's size as with Halley's prediction in the 18th century. A critical examination of the successive editions of Newton's Principia furnishes proof of this mutual influence.
