L'espace domestique : pour une géographie de l'intérieur//For an insider's geography of domestic space

Domestic space has been neglected by social sciences, and especially by Geography. This space is an anthropic, differentiated and private one, which has to do with the family and the body, and constitutes a basic territory. As a geographical space, it is both produced by society and social values, and involved in the social reproduction of everyday life. Domestic space is an important scientific and epistemological issue in so far as the people who live there behave as geographical agents and build their domestic space, at a bodily and individual scale unfamiliar to most of the geographers. Trying to overpass the methodological and epistemological reluctance of Geography with the topic, modernity is proposed as a key to a better understanding of the recent changes in domestic space.Les sciences sociales et singulièrement la géographie ne se sont guère intéressées à l'espace domestique. Cet espace est anthropique, différencié, privé, familial, corporel et il constitue un territoire fondamental. En tant qu'espace géographique, il est le produit d'une société dont il porte les normes et, en même temps, il structure la vie quotidienne et participe à la reproduction sociale. L'espace domestique est un enjeu scientifique et épistémologique important car ceux qui l'habitent le construisent en tant qu'acteurs géographiques à l'échelle, négligée par la discipline, du corps et de l'individu. En cherchant à dépasser les réticences épistémologiques et méthodologiques de la géographie sur ce thème, on se propose d'examiner la question de l'espace domestique dans son rapport à la modernité.Staszak Jean-François.
