The aim of this article is to show the emergence of European company in the global industry of semiconductors. ST Microelectronics was born in 1987 from the merger of the Italian SGS Microelectronica and the French Thomson- Semiconducteurs. From the beginning, the two firms borrowed from the United States's technological and managerial resources, and expanded in a national framework, with the characteristies of their respective identity. Their merger is linked to the European integration process and allowed entry into the club of the ten first worldwide manufacturers of semiconductors.
