While rainfed agriculture had been left aside at the beginning of the Green revolution in India, semi-arid millet cultivation started modernising during the 1970s. However a case in South Kamataka shows that high yield varieties and chemical fertilization without irrigation increase cost of production without increasing profit proportionabely. As it is neither intensive irrigated agriculture, nor traditional rainfed agriculture but «in-between», this type of agriculture will face more difficulties due to economic liberalisation in progress.
