Les changements de l'environnement à l'échelle du globe et les géographes

Man's activities have been modifying the environment for a long while, though awareness of the global consequences of these changes is a very recent phenomenon. A perception of the fact that habitats may be affected in an irreversible way is raising political concern and new international research programmes are being set up for the 1990s. After recalling certain current environmental changes, this paper presents the aims of the main programmes now in preparation : The "International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (Global Change) " aims at describing and understanding the earth system, especially in the areas in which significant change may occur on time scales of decades to centuries. Complementary to the I.G.B.P., the " Human Dimensions of Global Change Programme " is mainly concerned with the interactions with human activities. Other programmes are focused on earth sciences and on the interactions between the oceans and the atmosphere. Several possibilities exist for geographers to take part in these programmes, via the I.G.U., in the framework of European projects or in an individual capacity.L'Homme depuis longtemps modifie son environnement, mais la conscience des conséquences de ces modifications à l'échelle planétaire est un phénomène très récent. La perception du fait que les habitats risquent d'être altérés de manière irréversible est en train de susciter l'intérêt du monde politique et de nouveaux programmes internationaux de recherche pour les années 1990. Après un rappel de certaines modifications de l'environnement en cours, cet article présente les objectifs des principaux programmes actuellement en gestation. « Géosphère-biosphère (Global Change) » a pour objectif de décrire et de comprendre l'ensemble du système terrestre, surtout dans les domaines où des modifications importantes peuvent se produire en quelques décennies ou quelques siècles. Complémentaire du précédent, le programme « Les dimensions sociales des changements de l'environnement planétaire » s'intéresse surtout aux interactions avec les activités humaines. D'autres programmes sont centrés sur les sciences de la Terre ou sur les interactions entre l'océan et l'atmosphère. Les possibilités de participation de géographes à ces programmes sont nombreuses, par le biais de l'U.G.I., dans le cadre d'initiatives européennes, ou à titre individuel.Pirazzoli Paolo Antonio.
