Abstract: Protection and tourist development of the natural sites in the French northern Alps listed between 1906 and 1930 : the situation today. The first French law concerning the protection of natural monuments and sites was passed in 1906 and provided for the protection of such landscapes by means of a classification system. This law remained in force until 1930 and over the 24-year period no fewer than 41 sites and natural monuments were listed in the three departments of French northern Alps. Some of the sites, such as the Sierroz gorges near Aix-les Bains or the Fer-à-cheval cirque at Sixt, were already established as popular destinations with alpine tourists even before they were listed, while others were frequented by people taking...
