Abstract : Detecting changes in river flow by means of the Base Flow Index method. The paper proposes using the Base Flow Index (BFI) method to detect possible changes in daily flow rates as a result of human impact or climatic events. Based on an automatic separation of base flows and flood flows, this technique may be used to extract information which would not be accessible from a simple examination of total flow. By way of an example, the technique is used to compare two catchment areas in the Vosges mountains. The regime of one of these areas is regulated slightly by a small dam.
