Abstract : The concept of the mountain with reference to the Italian mountains. This article is an essay on the concept of the mountain and its various definitions according to whether it is considered in terms of administrative criteria, the use made of the area, or political aspects. With the help of examples taken from the diverse mountainous areas of Italy, the approach identifies relationships which are not only economic but also cultural and, in the final analysis, related to a way of life, relationships which may become linked on the basis of the uses that the different actors make of tbese areas.
