L'eau précipitable : un paramètre climatique trop rarement exploité

The precipitable water : a climatic index which is too seldom taken into account. The atmospheric moisture is often referred to as a main climatic factor. However, both climatologists and meteorologists usually state only a partial estimate of it. The precipitable water is the most accurate measure of the whole atmospheric water content. But this moisture index making use of aerological data for its determination, has not often been taken into account by French research workers. The author first recalls the definition of precipitable water, in theory. Then, he applies himself to the elaboration of an elementary mathematical calculation method using the aerological data without any change. At last, three examples suggest how interesting such a climatic index may be for geographers. In the first one, the precipitable water allows us to compare quantitatively, wet air with dry air (fig. 2). The second one gives us an accurate estimate of the mean water-vapour contained by the different air masses converging towards France (fig. 3). The third one explains that the snow falls proceeding from continental arctic air during hard winters can only be scarce, because of the low moisture of this air mass. On the contrary, the heavy rains pouring at times over southern France are derived from Saharian air strongly moistured after crossing the Mediterranean sea (fig. 4). Beyond these different examples, this paper wishes to draw the reader's attention to this climatic index too seldom taken into account. First, it may be used to specify the usual climatic vocabulary and, further on, to make progress in physical climatonomy.L'eau atmosphérique joue un rôle climatique primordial. Pourtant, climatologues et météorologistes n'en donnent, le plus souvent, qu'une évaluation fragmentaire. L'eau précipitable mesure la quasi-totalité de l'eau atmosphérique ; mais cet indicateur d'humidité qui nécessite une exploitation des radiosondages aérologiques n'a guère retenu l'attention des chercheurs français. Dans un premier temps, l'auteur rappelle la définition théorique de l'eau précipitable. Puis il s'attache à l'élaboration d'une méthode simple de calcul mathématique directement compatible avec l'information météorologique recueillie par radiosondage. Enfin, trois exemples suggèrent l'intérêt géographique de ce paramètre climatique. Le premier exemple tente de quantifier l'opposition banale air humide - air sec (fig. 2). Le second présente une évaluation précise de la charge hygrométrique moyenne propre aux diverses masses d'air qui convergent sur la France (fig. 3). Le troisième explique les neiges parcimonieuses des grands hivers par la faible humidité de l'air arctique continental ; inversement, les pluies diluviennes qui s'abattent périodiquement sur la France méridionale découlent de la forte teneur en eau de l'air saharien, humidifié au contact de la Méditerranée (fig. 4). Par-delà ces exemples divers, cette contribution souhaite attirer l'attention du lecteur sur un outil qui permettrait d'une part, de préciser le vocabulaire climatologique usuel, d'autre part de progresser dans la voie d'une climatologie physique normative.Trzpit Jean-Paul.
