L'espace du géographe

Geographer's space. Geographer's space has original features that make it differ front nature : it results from the projection of the society that set it ; it reflects its aims, its logic, its history. Society and space make a whole in an inter-acting system where society creates itself when creating space. Thus defined, space is a whole made of components between which there is necessarily a non-rigid coherence. Most often, geographic spaces are open to the outside and join themselves according to some processes which allow them to specialize in some kind of hierarchy, under the protection of political boundaries. These asymmetrical relations between spatial elements generate tensions where regionalization draws its origins. This hierarchized organization has been exported by capitalism out of its limits, thus dividing the world between central countries and peripheric ones. The creation of economic communities may go along with the burst of national spaces and their integration into new units.L'espace du géographe a des caractéristiques spécifiques qui le distinguent de l'espace naturel : il est le résultat de la projection de la société qui l'a aménagé; il en reflète la finalité, la rationalité, l'histoire. Société et espace constituent un tout indissociable dans un système d'interactions où la société se crée en créant l'espace. Ainsi défini, l'espace est un tout fait de composants entre lesquels s'établit nécessairement une cohérence sans rigidité. Le plus souvent, les espaces géographiques s'ouvrent sur l'extérieur et s'articulent les uns aux autres selon des processus d'organisation qui leur permettent, sous la protection des frontières politiques, la spécialisation dans la hiérarchisation. Ces relations dissymétriques entre les éléments spatiaux sont génératrices de tensions d'où le régionalisme tire son origine. Cette organisation hiérarchisée, le capitalisme l'a exportée hors de ses limites partageant ainsi le monde en pays centraux et en pays périphériques. La création de communautés économiques risque de s'accompagner de l'éclatement des espaces nationaux et de leur intégration dans de nouveaux ensembles.Isnard Hildebert. L'espace du géographe.
