Abstract. The golden rule which is still valid is that glacial erosion exaggerates the contrasts of preglacial relief . To what extent can we find justification for this rule in two recent works on the subject. The progress made in the study of the flow of the base of the glacier (L.Lliboutry) suggests the possibility of shattering which is usually in cold climates limited only to very thick glaciers. But the frost is not severe enough to cause the shattering of hard and unfragmented rock. G. Galibert emphasises abrasion which according to him is proportional to the thickness of the glacier and not to its speed.
