The rescue medal: official identification of moral merit in the 19th century This text takes an initial look at the still little-known history and socio-political uses of practices involving certification and reward for moral merit in France after the revolution. It analyses the methods set up and the development of one of the first state identifications of its kind - official honorary distinctions for «rescues» or «acts of courage and devotion», from their origin in 1820 to the end of the 19th century.
